Shoveling $#!t

"Stopping a piece of work just because it's hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it, and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position." --Stephen King

I love this quote. I referred to it often, while working on my manuscript. Who better to know than the master of horror, himself?

There were a lot of times when I just wanted to quit my story. I wondered why I was still writing it. I didn't feel the concept was sellable, but then I would read this quote and it would make me start again.

I read that he reads and writes four to six hours a day with a daily writing quota of 2,000 words. I wish I had that kind of time to give to the craft. If I'm able to squeeze in some computer time before going to work, that's a good writing day for me.

Nice Surprise

How seriously cute is my daughter? While at work Friday afternoon, and really just wanting to go home, the receptionist walked into my office with a pretty bouquet of flowers. Lilies to be exact, intertwined with fall leaves.

Recently, I had received a rejection, so naturally my mind jumped to that reason for the blooms, even after I read the card. They were from my daughter. However, I was wrong. She ordered them before she knew about the rejection. After reading my blog, she called the florist and placed the order. It was a lovely gesture a very sweet card. Thanks Hon!

Lure of the Lily

September 21-25 is National Flower Week. What a perfect time to brighten a loved one’s day with a floral greeting.

Do you have a favorite flower? I love flowers and I have a list of favorites that I have been trying to narrow down to just one. However, that proved impossible, so here’s my short list…

Hydrangeas have always been an amazing flower to me. Some have blooms as big as a child's head and they come in a variety of colors. Have you ever seen pink, purple and blue blossoms all on the same bush? It’s all in the soil. Pink blossoms mean the soil contains larger amounts of lime. And a blue blossom, the soil is more acidic.

And then there are orchids. Who doesn’t love their exotic beauty? The diverse colors and shapes. The fragrances, ranging from delicate to noxious. Some blooms last only days. Orchids probably share an ancestor with the lily family, another of my favorites. That heritage is noticeable in some species.

Who can resist the lure of the lily? Two of my favorite varieties, the trumpet (or calla) lily and the canna. Neither are true lilies, but both are unique, ornamental and gorgeous.

Many of these flowers were around during the Regency period. The canna lily has been around for hundreds of years and flourished in popularity during the Victorian age. You can read more about these and your favorite flowers on the following links.

Do You Feel It?

The beautiful hues, the movements, the changes of fall? Although not officially fall, it is my favorite time of year.

For me, fall is a time of renewal and change. After the lazy summer season, I promise myself to become more focused and organized in my writing--perhaps if I set up another three-ring binder for the characters of my current WIP and used colorful tabs and labels, then I might successfully plot a complete story. (You have no idea how many of these binders I have put together and none have helped me accomplish my goal.) I'm just not a plotter. I should learn this about myself by now, but I keep hoping for that magic key to unlocking the secret... Although I know a binder is not the answer, the lure of organization and a fresh start is almost too much.

I guess I love fall for its transitions and great optimism. Some of my other fall favorites:

Carmel apples
Fall fashions
Leaves changing color
Carving pumpkins
Halloween
Thanksgiving

What's your favorite thing about the fall?

Ta ta 'til next time.
